魏郡人大烙铁，家里本非常富有，自己又是公务员，多年来贪了不少，上下打点便升官搬往外地了，旧宅转卖他人，但凡入住者大病不起。无奈将旧宅极低价钱转卖给邻居小书生。小书生先独自带著大刀，傍晚走进北面堂屋，爬到屋梁上。到夜里三更尽，忽然有一个人，身长一丈多，戴高帽，穿黄衣，上堂来呼叫道︰「细腰。」细腰答应他。他问︰「屋里怎麼会有生人气味？」细腰回答︰「没有生人。」黄衣人便离开了。一会儿，有一个戴高帽、穿青衣的人，接著又有一个戴高帽、穿白衣的人，来堂屋和细腰问答，像先前一样。
到天亮时，小书生便下到堂屋中，用先前那些人的方法呼唤细腰，问道︰「穿黄衣的人是谁？」细腰说︰「是黄金。在堂屋西边墙壁下。」「穿青衣的人是谁？」答道︰「是铜钱。在堂屋前面井边五步远的地方。」「穿白衣的是谁？」答道︰「是白银。在墙东北角的柱子下面。」「你又是谁？」答道︰「我伸缩棍。如今在灶台下。」等到天亮，小书生按次序掘那些地方，得到黄金、白银五百斤，铜钱千万贯。于是取得伸缩棍吐了口水使其变回原形。斜插腰间为武器。从此他十分富裕，住宅终於清静安宁了。
